Our Vision
Excellence in surgical training is an achievable aspiration for all and membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers is universally recognised as a professional badge of honour.
Our Mission
To support and nurture a diverse and inclusive community of surgical trainers. To define, promote and uphold the highest standards of surgical training. To ensure the recognition of excellence in surgical training.
What is the Faculty of Surgical Trainers
Surgical training has never been more demanding. Trainers are expected to deliver high-quality education in less time, across more distributed environments, and with fewer formal structures of support than their counterparts in other specialties.
The Faculty of Surgical Trainers was established to change that. Created within the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, we are the first Faculty of our kind in the UK, built specifically to professionalise the role of the surgical trainer and ensure it receives the recognition it merits.
What We Do
The Faculty sets the standards that define what excellent surgical training looks like, provides education and development opportunities for trainers at every stage of their career, and convenes a community of practice through events, webinars and our annual conference.
Our standards support members in meeting the requirements of the GMC trainer approval process and provide a framework for evidencing their contribution to surgical education. Through our joint grant programme with ASME, we fund research that advances the evidence base for surgical training. And through the FST Medal, we recognise individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the field.
Membership of the Faculty — whether as an Associate, Member or Fellow — signals a commitment to excellence in surgical training that is recognised across the profession.
